Backlink decay is the failure that hits charts whose data is still right. You open the referring-domains dashboard and a link you earned 18 months ago is gone. The competitor who cited your chart shipped an overnight edit, and the new version points at somebody else's number.
No 404. No outage. The page still loads, still ranks, still serves the same figure. The link is gone and nothing in your stack noticed.
The dashboard tells you the count dropped. It never tells you why.
Backlink Decay Is Claim Rot
There are two ways a backlink dies, and only one of them is the one everybody plans for.
Link rot is the familiar one. A page goes offline, the citation becomes a dead reference, and you fix it with a redirect, a Wayback snapshot, or an outreach email. Every SEO tool watches for it.
Backlink decay is the other one. The cited page is alive, ranking, and still serving its number, and the citation has already been handed to someone else. The mechanism behind it is how charts lose their backlinks when the claim moves: a citation points at a number, and the number is the part that ages first.
Search the term and you'll get advice that treats both as the same problem. Refresh, republish, redirect. None of it repairs a link that moved because a competitor found a fresher source. A blog that hasn't lost a single 200-OK page can still be hemorrhaging backlinks underneath, and no dashboard it owns will show the drain.
Three Ways Backlink Decay Strikes
Backlink decay arrives three ways, and not one of them is a broken link.

The source updates its number. A 2024 SaaS benchmark ships its 2025 edition, and the figure a writer quoted in their 2024 post turns into a zombie statistic the day the newer number lands. Every published chart is a frozen liability from the moment it ships, and a stale cited number is the first place that liability shows.

The citing post gets edited. The usual assumption is that time did it. The real actor is a writer at a competitor pulling your link because their editor flagged the number as old. Treat the citing post as a fixed artifact and you'll miss it, because it's a living document with its own refresh schedule. Backlink decay moves at the speed of the citing publisher's content team, which is why the link disappears while your page sits still.

A fresher chart takes the citation. A writer weighing two sources picks the one updated this quarter. Once a fresher chart enters the niche, the older citation's half-life is measured in editor-touches. Calendar months have nothing to do with it. The chart losing the link can be correct, well-built, and simply older than another chart that says roughly the same thing.

The instrument here works the other way. Three live distributions, one per question, that fill as the niche votes.
A benchmark for backlink decay can't honestly start full. I refused to ship this one pre-filled, because a populated chart on day one would mean borrowing numbers from a study that already ran, which is the exact failure this post is about wearing a new title.
Charts are claims. A benchmark chart is a claim about a cohort, and a cohort that hasn't voted hasn't made one. So each chart stays blank until 15 responses land in its slice. The instrument a Series A founder loads in July won't be the one a Series B head of content loaded in April.
Three questions decide which charts render: which ARR band you operate in, what your CAC payback period looks like now, and how that payback has moved across the last four quarters. Each chart fills its own distribution as responses cross the 15-vote line.
Every chart that renders stands on at least 15 responses in that slice. The distributions they build are what next quarter's citing publishers will be reading when they choose a source.
What The Benchmark Will Not Measure
The charts are only half the instrument. The paragraph beneath them is the other half, and a reading written in April can't honestly describe a distribution that looks different in July.
The third question is the one the paragraph listens to. How CAC payback has moved over the last four quarters is the live signal of which cohorts are most exposed to claim decay next, so when the dominant movement shifts, the reading below it shifts too. You're reading the same post a peer will open next quarter, and the peer is reading a different paragraph.
Every benchmark earns its authority by being honest about what the niche has not yet reported. The movement slot stays open, waiting for the cohort that will define the next refresh cycle's reading of the niche. The cohort that reports first is the one whose situation propagates downstream.
One thing the benchmark leaves alone is platform-channel decay. That's a different failure on a different clock. This instrument cedes that ground on purpose. It maps the backlink decay that hits the chart embedded in a post the writer half-forgot they published.
Three Places Backlink Decay Hits Your Charts
The benchmark above measures the niche. Your own posts are the next move. Open your three highest-traffic posts, find every chart in them, and look at three specific places where backlink decay is working right now.
The first is the source-update gap. Any chart citing a third-party benchmark on an annual cadence has a known decay window. If the chart still shows last year's figure, the next writer to edit a citing post reaches for a fresher source and the link walks. Re-dating the post fixes nothing. Rebind the chart to a source whose update cadence your team controls, or swap the third-party citation for a first-party measurement you took yourself.
The second is citation-displacement pressure. Any chart sharing its niche with a more frequently updated chart gets replaced the next time a citing post is edited. The team that wins the citation is the one whose chart is freshest at the moment a writer picks a source. Best chart on launch day counts for nothing. Where other publishers ship weekly, that's stale data backlink loss at full speed.
The third is the audit gap. The referring-domain dashboard reports counts, and counts hide composition. A 200-domain headline can hide the loss of the five domains that drove 80% of the post's authority. Search Console won't sort your backlinks by decay risk. Whether your outdated charts are losing backlinks is a knowable thing, but only with an instrument that reads every post in the blog.
For posts under 90 days old, internal-link cleanup is what does the most good. Past 90 days, the citations pointing in are what deserve the work.
Fix the claim under the chart, and the backlinks heal themselves.
